The Itsy Bitsy Spider, often known as Incy Wincy Spider is one popular traditional nursery rhyme and fingerplay that is often used among children in preschools around the world. The original Itsy Bitsy Spider was published in 1910 when it was known as “The Spider Song”.
The song essentially paints a picture of a spider as it ascends, descends, and reascends the downspout or “water spout” of a gutter system.
The song is often accompanied by a trail of gestures that mimic the words of the song, these accompanying hand gestures are pretty straightforward, hands will move upwards when the spider climbs up, fingers mimic raindrops then hands are swept from one side to the other when the spider is washed out then form a semicircle to symbolize the sun and finally do the climbing motions again.
Itsy Bitsy Spider Lyrics
The itsy bitsy spider crawled up the water spout.
Down came the rain, and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain,
and the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.
