This was a well-known and popular rhyme on both sides of the Atlantic by the middle of the 19th Century and was sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle or Jack and Jill. Kitty Fisher, the person who found Lucy Locket’s wallet in the second verse was a famous 18th Century courtesan and aspiring actress, who was notorious as the mistress of several well-known men of the day.
