The Wheels on the Bus is a very popular nursery rhyme that combines simple hand gestures with repetitive verses which are easy to learn. This makes it a great pick for younger audiences and ideal for group activities such as toddler and nursery groups.
Verna Hills from Massachusetts was credited as being the author in 1939, the first traceable publication of the rhyme. However, although the lyrics were new, the melody is the same as “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”. It was originally just named ‘The Bus’ and in many British versions the ending finishes ‘all day long, but in America, it is mostly known to end ‘all through the town.
The nursery rhyme is believed to have been originally created to liven up boring bus journeys for younger children, and over the years additional verses have been added. The lyrics are slightly repetitive and there are other versions too, and the song has similarities to 99 Bottles of Beer as a way to kill time on long trips.
