Where is Thumbkin? is a delightful nursery rhyme that’s perfect for babies and younger children. It’s a classic example of finger play that entertains while teaching children about the different fingers on their hands. Wiggling the finger you’re singing about and hiding it behind your back makes this a great interactive rhyme.
It’s usually sung to the tune of Frère Jacques, but the exact origins of the rhyme are unknown. It’s believed to date back to the early 20th century, at least. Many attribute the modern popularity of Where is Thumbkin to the hit TV show, Barney & Friends, which featured a giant purple singing dinosaur.
It’s an easy rhyme to remember and every verse has the same words with the exception of what you are looking for which changes each time. Typically, the rhyme uses thumbkin, pointer, baby, ring man, and tall man as the subjects but these can be adapted to suit any situation.
