Sometimes known as Sally the Camel, Alice the Camel is a fun counting rhyme that is excellent for teaching numbers. Finger actions and whole-body movement accompanies the song, so it’s an ideal activity for singing in circles.
Alice the Camel is credited to Barney the Dinosaur, after being broadcast in an episode in 1991. It’s sung to the same melody as Dry Bones so it’s very easy to pick up and learn. As the song goes on, Alice’s five humps are reduced until none are left using a repetitive structure and the same lyrics over and over again. Only the number changes each time until the final verse where there’s a surprise ending as Alice’s true identity is revealed as a horse!
This rhyme is still very popular in schools and playgroups, with many children wanting to sing it at home and share it with their loved ones time and time again.
